Dear Dr. Diaz:
it is my understanding the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) received FY'05 i Appropriations funding to be used to conduct site-specific vulnerability analyses on the spent fuel pools of nuclear power plants currently operating within the US. I am pleased the NRC will be conducting these analyses at each site.
As you know, Oyster Creek is the oldest operating nuclear power plant in the country and there is deep concern among my constituency about the threat Oyster Creek poses as a potential terrorist target. With this in mind, I respectfully request the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Forked River, New Jersey, be among the first five plants to be studied. In doing so, I also request that the vulnerability analysis be led by federal employees, as favored by Congress.
Finally, I would like to know if the vulnerability analyses at each of the plants will be based on recommendations put forth in the recently published National Academy of Sciences report, "Safety and Security of Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage?"
Thank you for your consideration of this critical matter. I look forward to your response.
