> Wording from MR 03-041 DRAFT design description (mod Is not yet approved):
> Framatome Drawing 501 9702E-03 shows that the repair of some penetration nozzles may require the temporary attachment of a nozzle extension. The purpose of the nozzle extension Is to facilitate the use of the remote tooling. The need for the nozzle extension will be determined during the repair process based on field measurements taken after the nozzle and old weld are machined away. The nozzle extension will be attached to a penetration nozzle by tack welding it to the remnant J-groove weld. After nozzle repair welding and NDE are complete, the nozzle extension and temporary tack welds will be
\\removed. ASME Section III NB-4435 requires a PT examination to be performed for the removal of
,emporary tack welds (nonstructural). Any flaws created In the remnant J-groove weld by the tack weld installation/removal are acceptable based on Framatome> '> s evaluation of leaving degraded J-groove weld material In the vessel head (Framatome Calculation 32-5019396). This evaluation was reviewed by the NRC and found to provide an acceptable basis for not fully characterizing flaws that might exist in the remnant J-groove weld (Relief Request MR 02-018-2). The Code requirement to perform a PT examination of the area of the tack weld will not be followed. Relief has already been granted by the NRC per SER 2003-0010 to deviate from Section Xl requirements to characterize flaws, and this approval is considered to bound this PT requirement. Although the SER exempted the overlap condition from their approval, this approval is being sought and will be documented once It is received.
