Subject:

Duke Energy Corporation Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Numbers 50-413 and 50-414 Severe Accident Mitigation Alternatives

Reference:

Letter, Duke Energy Corporation to USNRC Dated August 8, 2002,

SUBJECT:

Severe Accident Mitigation Alternatives In the referenced letter Catawba provided a response to a Severe Accident Mitigation Alternatives (SAMAs) to install flood protection around the 6900/4160 volt transformers.

In that letter Catawba made a commitment to have this modification completed by March 31, 2005. Catawba stated that it would keep the NRC Staff informed on the progress of this modification and any changes to the schedule.

This letter is to update the NRC staff on the status of the installation of the turbine building flood protection.

The flood protection walls for the Unit 2 transformers have been poured and are in the curing process.

The flood walls for the Unit 1 transformers will not be complete by March 31, 2005.

The delay in completion was due to several factors which included material availability, contractor manpower issues and scheduling of plant work in conjunction with this modification.

The completion date for the Unit 1 transformers is now currently scheduled for April 22, 2005.

This date does include some margin to account for any unforeseen delays.

Inquiries on this matter should be directed to R. D. Hart at (803) 831-3622.

Very truly yours, Aw Dhiaa Jamil RDH/s www. dukepower. corn
