7.8(3)(a) Summary of Plant Operations During the period January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2004 the reactor was critical for 4535 hours0.0525 days <br />1.26 hours <br />0.0075 weeks <br />0.00173 months <br /> with an energy output of 90,419 MWH. Major activities during this period included: requalification of 21 licensed operators; the licensing of a new senior reactor operator; and shipment of radioactive waste.
7.8(3)(b) Unscheduled Shutdowns
- 1. There were 5 scrams due to commercial power interruptions. After 4 of those scrams, a return to 20 MW occurred within an hour. For the other scram, a restart to 20 MW occurred within 40 hours4.62963e-4 days <br />0.0111 hours <br />6.613757e-5 weeks <br />1.522e-5 months <br />.
7.8(3)(c) Tabulation of Major Items of Plant Maintenance Note: Some of these items may be also listed as Engineering Change Notices (ECN).
- 1. Replaced thermal shield pump piping and associated valves.
- 2. Replaced three secondary cooling pumps and associated valves.
- 3. Replaced secondary pump motors for #5 and #6 pumps.
- 4. Replaced storage pool shell-and-tube heat exchanger (HE-8) with stainless steel plate-and-frame heat exchanger.
- 5. Refurbished sealing surfaces for all shim arm (control rods) drive shaft seals.
- 6. Replaced all four shim arms.
- 7. Replaced heavy water inventory.
- 8. Replaced valve disks for main primary pump discharge valves.
- 9. Replaced intermediate and power range nuclear instrumentation.
- 10. Cut 32 spent fuel elements in preparation for shipments.
- 11. Made a low-level radioactive waste shipment..

The following facility changes were completed this year. None required a license amendment or a change to the technical specifications, and there were no changes made pursuant to the applicable criteria of 10 CFR 50.59.

Gaseous releases consisted of 1358 curies of tritium, 947 curies of Argon-41, 0.03 curies of Br-82, and 0.05 curies of other beta-gamma emitters. There were 4.87 curies of tritium and 1.4 millicuries of other beta-gamma emitters released into the sanitary sewer. Environmental samples of the streams, vegetation, and/or soil, and air showed no significant changes.
