-Tampa * (813) 626-4161 Painters District Council 78 Ladies and Gentlemen:
Tampa - (813) 835-5888 Pipefitters Local No. 123 Tampa - (813) 636-0123 We are writing to notify you of possible unlawful practices involving Roofers Local No. 103 employees of Brock Specialty Services at Progress Energy's Crystal River W. Palm (877) 467.6637 site. On about February 26th, a representative of one our affiliated unions Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 15 Tampa - (813) 628-0021 received via mail, a letter (copy attached) listing what are purported to be Sprinkler Finters Local No. 821 employees of Brock and their Social Security numbers and expressing Ocala * (352) 369.0821 concerns about the legal status of these employees.
Teamsters Local No. 79 Tampa - (813) 621-1391 Our research revealed that, indeed the numbers appear to be false for the persons listed. In the case of Felipe" Gonzalez, the number 258 2318 associated with his name actually belongs to a Freddie Tanksley who was'bom in 1921 and has been deceased since June of 1979.
Additionally, since investigating this matter further we received reports that at least two of the Brock employees listed worked on nuclear unit #3. It has also been reported that on at least one occasion, a supervisor for Brock escorted some of these foreign workers using false l.D. onto the nuclear facility as a "red badge" without them first going through a background check that would have revealed the false nature of the documents used.
We have notified the true owners of each of the involved social security numbers of this situation and provided them with contact phone number for Progress Energy so that they may take the necessary steps to protect themselves from identity theft. _
We urge you to promptly investigate this matter. If background checks for contractor employees are in fact as lax as to allow foreign workers to gain access to this site through the use of false identification and identity theft, terrorist groups seeking to do great harm to the community could exploit this weakness. It is our hope that Progress Energy will not permit such conditions to occur. We are looking forward to your assurances that if such a risk exists, that it has been eliminated.
Sincerely, FdwardD. ees Michael J. Jeske President Secretary/Treasurer CC:
