Dear Congressman Cunningham:
I am responding on behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to your letter to the Department of Energy (DOE) dated February 9, 2005. The letter was forwarded to our agency for response since the subject of the letter did not fall within the purview of the DOE.
Enclosed with your letter was a constituent's (Mrs. Harriet Pellar's) note, expressing her concerns about San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) after she read an editorial written by Mr. Russell Hoffman. Mr. Hoffmans editorial contained various concerns and complaints about safety and security at SONGS, the nuclear industry in general, and renewable energy. The NRC staff has written directly to Mrs. Pellar to address her concerns. However, our response to her only addresses concerns about nuclear safety and security at SONGS and the impact on the health and safety of the public, since the other areas mentioned in Mr.
Hoffmans editorial are not within the purview of the NRC.
Enclosed is our letter to Mrs. Pellar. I believe that our response will help address her specific concerns about safety and security at SONGS. Thank you for taking the time to bring these concerns to the NRC's attention.
