Methodologv Population data for 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau website, and are attached. Population projections for years 2010, 2020, and 2030 were obtained from the North Carolina State Office of Management and Budget website, and are attached.
Using Microsoft Excel, these data were plotted in order to produce a scatter plot and demonstrate the (presumptive) linear relationship (population vs. time or population growth over time). Excel fit a line to the points and generated regression'lines (equations) for population growth in Brunswick County,'New Hanover County, and the state of North Carolina. These scatter plots and regression lines are attached. Excel also calculated correlation coefficients (r2) for each of the three lines, as follows:-
Brunswick r2 = 0.9937 New Hanover r2 = 0.9861 North Carolina r2 = 0.9846 Having established that the relationships were linear and the lines developed from 1970-2030 data were an exceptionally good fit, we used the regression lines to predict or extrapolate populations in Brunswick County, New Hanover County, and the state of North Carolina in the year 2040. These population projections are shown in Table 2-3 of the Environmental Report.
