IJ Calculation Package for Brunswick Transmission Lines Induced Current Analysis December 13,2002 Prepared for:
Progress Energy Raleigh, North Carolina Prepared by:
Steven J. Connor Tetra Tech NUS Aiken, South Carolina
I.
Purpose These calculations were performed in support of Applicant 's Environmental Report. Operating License Renewal Stage, BrunswickSteam Electric Plant, specifically section 4.13 on induced current. Section 4.13 provides the requirements for the calculation.
II.
Selection of Locations to Model In general, the profile drawings for each line were used to identify two types of locations where clearances were low. (1) at paved roads with low clearances and (2) any location with low clearance, regardless of terrain or structures beneath. For type I locations (i.e., at roads), all US Highways and North Carolina State Roads were identified as candidates for analysis. Dirt Toads were specifically excluded. The least clearance of all the road crossings was selected. For type 1 locations, either the least clearance location or a representative for a set of least clearance locations was selected for analysis. The candidate locations are cataloged in the attached notes.
The locations analyzed are thought to represent bounding conditions on the transmission line. However, it is possible that some logging roads could have lower clearances. However, a large sampling of roads was considered for each transmission line: It is believed that they represent well the design conditions throughout the length of the trawsmission line. Given that no analyzed location was near the 5 millamp lmit, it seems unlikely than any missed road would exceed the standard either. All the high usage roads were included.
M. Inputs The plan and profile drawing identified in the attached notes were used to obtain the following information:
structure numbers of the two towers in the span of interest, structure type, sag for the span (at 200 degrees Fahrenheit), span, elevation of conductors at the towers, elevation of the location of interest, clearance at the location of interest,-and distance from the nearest tower to the'location of interest. Given that the sags at 200 degrees were used instead of the'120-degree sags, the inputs to the model are very conservative.
Using other engineering drawings identified in the notes, tower dimensions were obtained for horizontal and vertical dimensions of the three conductors, horizontal and vertical dimensions for the static wires, specification of the conductors (e.g. 1272 MCM 45/7 ACSR), specifications of the static wire, and phasing of conductors.
ACDCLINE uses conductor bird names as inputs. The transmission line drawings did not contain bird names, but did provide specifications. Using the ACDCLINE Appendix A, bird names were selected. The selection was based on the type (e.g. ACSR) and the stranding (e.g. 45/7) and not on the circular mills. No unique bird.
name selection was possible, so one was selected at raedom from the list of those that matched type and stranding. The results are not expected to be affected by an improper choice.
See attached notes and the model run printouts for details.
IV.
Methods In most cases the elevation of the two towers of a span of interest were different and the elevation of the location of interest was different than the nearest tower base. Because ACIDCLINE does not accommodate non-level geometries, a surrogate geometry was constructed that uses weighted average height for conductor attachments above the location of interest. The surrogate geometry had the two towers -at the same elevation. This surrogate geometry would not have identical impact with that of the actual geometry, but it should be close.
The code was first run to give electric field with no coupled objects to find the transverse location with the highest electric field strength. The code was then rerun with a long box coupled object with dimensions of the largest tractor-trailer truck that is'allowed on North Carolina roads. Where analyses were at non-road locations, a tractor trailer truck was still used (instead of something like a combine) for simplicity and conservatism.
2
Each transmission line was considered in isolation; however, as many as eight transmission lines run down a corridor, spaced in two groups of four, 75 feet apart within a group and 180 feet separation between the groups.
To test.whether adjacent transmission lines can significantly affect the outcome for a given line, tests were run with one, two, and three adjacent transmission lines (ACDCLINE does not work well with more lines.). For the ABC/ABC/ABC phasing used by the Brunswick lines, the results showed interesting variations in the shapes of the electric fields, but no significant change in the induced current. Results of these tests are provided in the attached ACDCL1NE printouts.
V.
Results Analytical results for each analysis is provided in the table below to two significant digits. In reporting in the Environmental Report, the highest value per transmission line will be reported. The reported values will be provided as "less-than" values because of the conservative input of 200-degree sag.

distance to point of interest is 745/2 373 feet Str 30: 97 feet elevation of conductor connection distance to point of interest is 373 feet elevation of ground at point of interest -42 feet Surrogate Geometry Use 200 degree sag. Place low point exactly in center span at 373 feet.
Relative height of conductor connections is 26 feet clearance + 27 feet sag 53 feet.
Relative height of OHGW is 53 + 14.75 = 67.75 feet.
