Upgrading of Design Basis Threat TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
I am writing to request that the NRC revise and upgrade the Design Basis Threat for U.S. nuclear power stations by constructing shields consisting of steel I-beams and steel cabling to obstruct the angle of air attack. The shields could reduce the impact and penetration force by air on safety-related structures.
I live in Durham, NC and Shearon-Harris Nuclear plant (S-H) is located in adjacent Wake County. As you should know, the spent fuel rods at S-H are stored in pools thereby making the vulnerable plant an easy mark for destruction, desolation and the killing of many people within a 50-mile radius as well as the Injuring of multitudes.
My wife and I hosted two physicians from Belarus two years ago and learned how nuclear meltdown has effected their country. Belarus suffered and continues to suffer from the disastrous meltdown at Chernobyl; the winds happened to be blowing in the direction of Belarus at the time of the meltdown.
Many people were killed and untold people have suffered healthwise. All the soil In Belarus Is contaminated. Half of the population fled the country. There continues to be a dramatic increase in all cancers since the meltdown.
I do not want this disaster to happen anywhere In my country and especially not at S-H due to the greed of the ownership and lack of proper regulations, protection, and thorough inspections by the NRC.
I I implore you to take your responsibilities seriously in protecting the American people from nuclear catastrophe and stop favoring the Interests of the nuclear industry.
