OF DECEMBER 8, 2004, CATEGORY 1 MEETING WITH ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC., RE: HIGH PRESSURE COOLANT INJECTION PUMP IN-SERVICE TESTING VIBRATION (TAC NO. MB8773)
On December 8, 2004 a Category 1 public meeting was held between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives from Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. (ENO or the licensee) at NRC Headquarters, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss questions related to a relief request for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS). The proposed relief request would allow alternate testing to verify operational readiness of the high pressure coolant injection (HPCI) pump.
The licensee presented information on the history of issues related to the PNPS in-service testing vibration monitoring program for the HPCI pump. Additionally, details of HPCI system safety function, mission time, operational data and vibration history were explained. ENO also explained how the layout of the HPCI pump configuration is impacting the main and booster pumps' vibration levels.
The NRC staff queried the licensee about several issues prior to the meeting via a draft request for additional information (RAI) regarding ENOs submittal dated December 6, 2002, and supplements dated February 10, and June 2, 2004. The draft RAI and ENOs supplement are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) under accession numbers ML041700127 and ML041620392, respectively. The licensee addressed the RAI questions at the end of the presentation, and is expected to provide a formal response to these questions in March 2005.
