LICENSE RENEWAL DRAFT SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT FOR THE JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2
Dear Mr. Stinson:
By letter dated September 12, 2003, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC or the applicant) submitted an application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the renewal of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP), Units 1 and 2, operating licenses for up to an additional 20 years. The license renewal application (LRA) was submitted pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 54, Requirements for Renewal of Operating Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants. The NRC staff determined that the LRA was complete and acceptable for docketing on October 24, 2003.
The NRC staff has reviewed the FNP, Units 1 and 2, LRA and has developed the enclosed Draft Safety Evaluation Report Related to the License Renewal of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, herein after referred to as the Draft Safety Evaluation Report (D-SER). This D-SER reflects the status of the staffs review of the LRA, requests for additional information (RAIs), the applicants responses to the NRC staffs RAIs and other questions related to the LRA through September 15, 2004, unless otherwise noted. Issuance of the enclosed D-SER is an important milestone for both the applicant and the staff.
In accordance with the schedule for completing the review of the FNP, Units 1 and 2, LRA, the applicant is requested to review the enclosed D-SER, verify its accuracy, and provide comments to the NRC staff by December 3, 2004. A revised and final SER will then be issued by April 8, 2005.
