Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit I Gentlemen:

The purpose of this letter is to provide information on the status of decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 (SONGS-1) requested by Mr. John Hickman of the NRC staff.

In order to prepare the reactor vessel and its internals for disposal at a licensed radioactive waste disposal facility, it was necessary to remove portions of the baffle and core barrel stainless steel material from the beltline region in order to meet established radioactivity limits. The steel was cut to size suitable for temporary storage in baskets in the SONGS-1 Spent Fuel Pool (SFP) and for later storage at the SONGS Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI). The resulting radwaste package is classified as greater than Class C in accordance with 10 CFR 61.55. Southern California Edison (SCE) completed the transfer of this activated steel material from the SFP to the ISFSI on September 10, 2004.

SCE is now proceeding with decommissioning the SFP. Complete decommissioning and removal of the SFP, the Fuel Handling Building and foundations is scheduled to complete in 2006.
