Dear Mr. Diaz:
New Jersey Carpenters Local 2018 is writing to express our support for the license extension for Oyster Creek Generating Station. While the plant's owners and operators, Exelon/AmerGen, have not filed for the 20-year extension, they have announced their intent to do so. An additional_20 yearspof operation for this clean, safe and reliable plant would provide on-going jobs for people in the local trades, as well as a stronger tax base and disposable income in Ocean County, along with other nearby communities.
Our brothers and sisters built this plant and continue to service it. For example, every 18 months or so, Oyster Creek is safely taken out of service to refuel and perform maintenance. Our people fill most of the additional jobs - up to 1,000 or more. These positions last from several weeks to over a month depending on the work needed to be done. Additionally, we service the plant by providing on-going maintenance functions. These jobs are in addition to the 451 people-not including the security forces-that work at the plant day to day.
The payroll from these positions goes directly into the local economy-restaurants, gas stations, motels and other retail stores. A recent Economic Impact Study demonstrated that Oyster Creek generated more than $69 million in direct and indirect wages and compensation in New Jersey, and more than $52 million In Ocean County in 2003.
We urge you to support the safe, long-term operation of Oyster Creek, for the jobs the plant provides, and the economic benefits it brings locally and statewide. Oyster Creek Generating Station provides enough clean, safe and reliable energy to power 600,000 New Jersey households. In our work with plant officials, it is clear that the
-plant is maintained and.upgraded to ensure it meets all safe operating standards.
Our people would not work there if they did not believe it was safe.
Your support for Oyster Creek's clean, safe, reliable long-term operation is appreciated.
Sincerely, Cornell E. Pogorzelski, Union Carpenter, Executive Board Trustee and Delegate, for New Jersey Carpenters Local 2018
