o Regional Planning Organizations (RPOs) in Connecticut Last modified: July 09,2002 D1srIipiQJ1 l Meetings I Mambor WDescription Under Section 16a-4a of the Connecticut General Statutes, the Office of Policy and Management is responsible for the designation and redesignation of logical planning regions within the state. Accordingly, OPM has designated fifteen such planning regions.A listof the municipalities within each region along with individual town population estimates for the year 2000 from the Connecticut Department of Public Health is available.

The municipalities within each of those regions have voluntarily created through local ordinance one of the three types of Regional Planning Organization allowed under Connecticut statute (a Regional Council of Elected Officials, a Regional Council of Governments, or a Regional Planning Agency) to carry out a variety of regional planning and other activities on their behalf.

  • Connecticut Town Map PDF format (44k) This is a vector ("drawn") image of the Connecticut town map. It is in Portable Document Format (PDF), also known as Acrobat format. It can be viewed and printed with the Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded without charge from the Adobe web site. This format preserves the formatting and look of paper documents, which is why we also use it to present our monthly Connecticut Economic Digest and out Town Profiles on the Internet. The image quality of this format is much better than the GIF format.
  • Connecticut Town Map EPS format (87k) This is an encapsulated PostScript file of the Connecticut town map. It is of equal quality with the PDF format, and can be embedded in documents created by many desktop publishing systems and word processors. You may be unable to print it out unless you have a PostScript printer, however.
  • Connecticut Town Map GIF format (49k) This is a raster ("scanned") image of the Connecticut town map. It is 1569 pixels wide by 1141 pixels high. The town names are readable but not of high quality. To produce the highest quality output, we recommend that you download and use one of the vector formats. This format, however, is viewable directly by your browser without requiring any special software.

  • http://www.gcol.com/rmacgregor/conn.htm A computer-calculated study, completed in October 2000, ranks all 169 towns and cities in the state of Connecticut according to attractiveness and quality of life, using ArcView 3.2, a Geographic Information System (GIS) produced by ESRI of California. Statistical data utilized in the study were obtained from the 1998-1999 Connecticut Town Profiles, published by the CT Dept. of Economic and Community Development. Also used were graphical data obtained from the University of Connecticut Map and Geographic Information Center website, at http.//magic.lib.uconn.edu.

Twelve different criteria were used to rank the towns. Ten of these criteria were selected from the Connecticut Town Profiles: Crime Rate, High School Graduates Attending 4-Year Colleges, Housing Prices, Infant Mortality Rate, Per Capita Income, Per Capita Taxes, Population Change, Poverty Rate, Student/Teacher Ratio, Unemployment Rate, Distance from Metro Areas, and Prettiness of Towns. For prettiness, I grouped the towns into five general categories, from prettiest to least pretty.
