March 25, 2004 Duke Energy Corporation ATTN: Mr. R. A. Jones Vice President Oconee Nuclear Station 7800 Rochester Highway Seneca, SC 29672

SUBJECT:

MEETING

SUMMARY

- OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-269, 50-270, 50-287

Dear Mr. Jones:

This refers to the technical staff meeting that was conducted at the Region II Office on March 11, 2004, to discuss a previous condition at the Oconee Nuclear Station where water was discovered in the bearing lubricating oil for the standby shutdown facility auxiliary service water (ASW) pump. A list of attendees is enclosed.

It is our opinion that this meeting was beneficial in that it provided the NRC staff with your understanding of how water entered into the ASW pump bearing housing as well as the details of the proposed test to substantiate your position that the ASW pump would have been capable of performing its safety function in the as found condition.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice", a copy of this letter and its enclosure will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRCs document system (ADAMS).

ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).

Should you have any questions concerning this meeting, please contact us.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Robert C. Haag, Chief Reactor Projects Branch 1 Division of Reactor Projects Docket Nos. 50-269, 50-270, 50-287 License Nos. DPR-38, DPR-47, DPR-55
