Dear Chairman Diaz,
-I am writing today to express my concern regarding the announcement made by the AmerGen Corporation to seek licensure renewal for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant in Lacey Township, New Jersey.
As you are aware from past meetings and correspondence, I have always maintained a close monitor on events at Oyster Creek. The safety and security of Oyster Creek, the oldest nuclear power plant in the country, is a major concern to me and to my constituents. Upon learning from site officials that AmerGen was seeking to extend the operating license of the Oyster Creek Generating Station by 20 years, it became apparent the need for continued dialogue is crucial. As such, I am requesting your assistance with this matter.
All reports indicate that relicensure is a lengthy and exhaustive process that will take the NRC at least two years to complete. Therefore, I am taking this opportunity to request information on the process and all that it entails.
In addition to basic relicensure information, specifically, I would like to know what tests and analyses are performed on site to determine if a facility's infrastructure can withstand another twenty years of operation under rigorous federal standards, what environmental tests are performed to determine current and future impacts on the local environment, and what steps are taken to correct previous safety and security infractions to ensure the same problems do not arise after license renewal has been granted.
Oyster Creek has recently been the topic of much public debate. The information requested will provide a better insight into the events taking place at the facility, providing myself and my constituents with the ability to better understand the relicensure process and the actions taken by the NRC as the application period progresses.
I would like to set up a meeting to further discuss this issue. Please contact Christine Hunter in my Washington office at (202)225-4765, to schedule a time that is convenient. As always, I thank you for your time and look forward to our continued cooperation with the safety and security of Oyster Creek.
