RESOLUTION NO. 04-/0Z RESOLUTION OF THE BOROUGH OF SEASIDE HEIGHTS, COUNTY OF OCEAN, STATE OF NEW JERSEY OPPOSING THE EXTENSION OF THE LICENSE FOR THE OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT WHEREAS, the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant has submitted a request to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for an extension of its license to continue to operate this facility through 2029; and WHEREAS, the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant is the oldest operating nuclear plant in the United States and is located in Lacey Township, in very close proximity to the
___Borough of Seaside Heights; and WHEREAS, this aged facility poses a risk to all residents of Ocean County, including the residents and visitors to the Borough of Seaside Heights; and WHEREAS, any incident that could result from the age related degradation of the facility, could have catastrophic effects on the Jersey Shore, as exposure to the radioactive material would effect those trying to evacuate; and WHEREAS, in addition, Strontium 90, which is known to kill marine life, has been detected in the discharge of nuclear plants and it has been found in teeth samples of numerous children throughout Ocean County, and WHEREAS, the continued operation of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant is a very unnecessary risk due to the above cited concerns and the fact that Oyster Creek only produces a minimal amount of energy in comparison to other power plants; and WHEREAS, the 650 megawatts of power produced by the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant represents less than one percent of the power on the PJM regional grid and the current PJM reserve margin can easily make up for Oyster Creek's retirement in the short term; and WHEREAS, the power produced by the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant should be replaced in the long term with clean, safe solutions such as energy efficiency measures and renewable energy production as called for by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities; now THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the governing body of the Borough of Seaside Heights, County of Ocean, State of New Jersey as follows:
- 1. The governing body does hereby declare its unequivocal opposition to the granting of a license extension to Exelon Nuclear Corporation for the operation of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant; and
- 2. The governing body calls for the development of clean, safe and renewable energy sources to replace the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant while utilizing the existing transmission grid; and
- 3. The governing body encourages further examination of ways to utilize the facility in a manner that would benefit the employees of the plant, their families and the financial interests of the people of Lacey Township and Ocean County; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution be forwarded to Governor James E. McGreevey, State Senator Andrew Ciesla, Assemblymen David
--- Wolfe~and James Holzapfel, the Ocean-County-Board-of-Chosen-Freeholders,-the-New - --
