January 30, 2004 Mr. Lew W. Myers Chief Operating Officer FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station 5501 North State Route 2 Oak Harbor, OH 43449-9760
SUBJECT:
DAVIS-BESSE REACTOR PRESSURE VESSEL HEAD SAMPLE PIECES
Dear Mr. Myers:
In order to gain information on the cause of the degradation of the old Davis-Besse reactor pressure vessel head, FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC) had testing performed on material from the head and submitted the results to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Some of those tests from your completed test program were performed at BWXT Services, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA (BWXT).
NRC is interested in additional testing, including destructive testing, being performed on three sample pieces from the old Davis-Besse reactor pressure vessel head. The sample pieces that we are interested in are designated as A2A7L, A2A7M, and A2A7N in the BWXT Services Report, Examination of the Reactor Vessel (RV) Head Degradation at Davis Besse (ADAMS ML033350306). These pieces are located at BWXT. The NRC intends to contract for the additional testing.
As a result, NRC requests that ownership of the above three sample pieces be transferred from FENOC to BWXT. BWXT will then be responsible for storage, surveying, and disposal of this material.
Contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
/RA/
