SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR NRC TO ASSUME ROLE AS LEAD AGENCY IN GENERAL ELECTRIC'S REQUEST TO TRANSFER MATERIALS
Dear Mr. Lohaus,
This is regarding Mr. C.J. Monetta's April 8, 2003, letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Retfuestirig Authorization to Transfer Residual Materials," from the General Electric site located in San Jose, California (GE San Jose site) to the GE Vallecitos Nuclear Center and subsequent correspondence.
Ih'conversations betw'een' MiMichael Lamastra, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeg'uards, ahd the California Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) it has been agreed that it s appropriate for the NRC'to';bversee the disposition and resolution of issues associated with newly discovered residual special nuclear material at the GE San Jose site.
Considering the history of the site and its release for unrestricted use by the NRC, we feel that it is imperative that the NRC conducts a thorough review of the information and data upon which the NRC's release was predicated.
You can be assured that RHB is interested in the final resolution f this concern and t hat we are very willing to participate with NRC in the resolution. If you have any questions or need additional information regarding this effort, please contact me or Frieda Taylor at (916) 445-0491.
