Subject:
Oconee Nuclear Station, Unit 3 Docket No. 50-287 Response to Order EA-03-009 re Pressurized Water Reactor Vessel Heads Report of Reactor Vessel Head Inspection Results NRC Order EA-03-009, dated February 11, 2003, § IV.E, requires submission of the results of Reactor Vessel Head (RVH) inspections performed per § IV.C and § IV.D of the order within 60 days after returning a unit to operation. On June 17, 2003, Oconee Unit 3 returned to operation with a replacement RVH following refueling outage 20. The examinations specified by the Order were performed as described in Duke Energy Corporation's response to the NRC Order, dated March 3, 2003.
As indicated in Duke's letter, the preservice examinations of the replacement RVH installed at Unit 3 satisfy the requirements of a bare metal examination of 100% of the RVH surface during the refueling outage immediately following issuance of the Order as referred to in
§ V.C(3) of the order. Visual inspections performed during the refueling outage per § IV.D of the Order to identify potential boric acid leaks from pressure retaining components above the RPV head found no evidence of boric acid leaks from above the RVH.
