This is regarding your application for relief dated 8/8/03 from the qualification requirements for dissimilar metal piping welds.
There are two parts to this relief request - one is to use the PDI program as an alternative to the ASME Code requirements, and one is relief from a depth sizing requirement. For plants that needed to perform such inspections this past spring outage, licensees needed relief from both parts. However, since that time, industry personnel have become qualified to the depth sizing requirement. Therefore, while review to use the PDI alternative is warranted, we are have more reserved about a request for relief from the depth sizing requirement.
Are you aware of the industrys latest capabilities to depth size flaws in dissimlar metal welds?
We propose to discuss with you in a conference call how the relief request may be modified.
