The Honorable Nils J. Diaz July 26, 2003 Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Re: Please Close Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant
Dear Chairman Diaz:
The Indian Point Nuclear Plant looms as one of the largest threats to our safety, environment and economy that this region has ever seen. Despite the plant's dismal safety record that spans decades, warnings from the President and the FBI confirming that U.S. nuclear plants are Al Qaeda terrorist targets, and plant security officers continuing to speak out about lapses and lax defense measures, you have yet to call for Indian Point's closure.
Indian Point is a unique case because It Is located in the most densely populated area in the country (Just 22 miles from New York City) where 21 million people live and work within a 50-mile radius of the power plant. It lacks a workable evacuation plan in the case of a significant radiological release, and it poses a direct threat to the nation's largest metropolitan economy
_-~_~-a----where a iargeeleasefr -ehlantroul-cause-damagesinthe undreds of billions of dollars As you know, Mr. James Lee Witt concluded the evacuation plan does not work and probably could never be made to protect those of us who live in the shadow of Indian Point.
I am wiring to ask you to take the following steps Immediately to protect the health and safety of my family and me:
(1) Call forthe immediate and permanent closure and orderly decommissioning of the Indian Point nuclear power plant; (2) Demand that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission withdraw Entergy's license to operate the Indian Point plant; (3) Demand that the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security decertify the radiological emergency plan for Indian Point because the plan falls to adequately protect public health and safety; (4) Demand Indian Point's owners, Entergy, secure the vulnerable spent fuel storage pools.
- Serly, CC: Governor George E. Pataki The Honorable Charles E. Schumer The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton The Honorable Michael Brown, Under Secretary Mr. J. Wayne Leonard, Chief Executive Officer, Entergy Mr. Jerry Yelverton, Chief Executive Officer, Entergy Nuclear
