Dear Commissioner Campbell:
I am responding on behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to your letter of July 10, 2003, which asked that the NRC conduct a planned problem identification and resolution inspection at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station as soon as feasible. You also expressed interest in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) participating in this activity.
We will be conducting the problem identification and resolution inspection during the weeks of August 11 and August 18. This inspection will look at a sample of corrective action activities to assure that temporary staff reassignments during the strike have not had an adverse impact on maintenance activities necessary to maintain the safe operation of the plant.
We will be pleased to have NJDEP participate in this inspection. The Region I specialist inspectors will coordinate directly with your staff.
We appreciate the expertise and professionalism of the NJDEP radiation protection and nuclear engineering staff. I can assure you that we will continue to monitor the situation at Oyster Creek closely, and as always, keep your staff informed of our observations. If you have any questions or comments on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me.
