Our reviewer, Allen Hiser, is reviewing your submittal dated February 18, 2003, and he has identified the following questions. Please call me to set up a phone call for the near future (later this afternoon, or tomorrow morning) to discuss these with with Hiser.
- 1. What is the justification that coverage up to 0.75 inches above the weld will provide an adequate level of quality and safety? In other words, provide justification that increasing the scope of inspection to 2 inches above the J-groove will not provide an increase in quality and safety. Are there residual stress data that indicates that 0.75 inches is a sufficient level above the weld, or is there any other basis that demonstrates an acceptable level of quality and safety for the restricted inspections?
- 2. With the proposed limits to the examination above the J-groove weld, how will the licensee provide "an assessment to determine if leakage has occurred in to the interference fit zone" of each nozzle?
- 3. Experience at St. Lucie identified inspection limitations that resulted in the loss of data for some axial locations on some nozzles. Does the licensee anticipate similar issues at Calvert, and if so, what are their plans to demonstrate that the inspection coverage was adequate?
