Meserve Chairman United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555-0001

Dear Mr. Meserve:

I am writing to express my concern and to seek your personal attention to the recently discovered leak at the Salem Unit I spent fuel pool location in Lower Alloways Creek Township, New Jersey.

I am especially concerned that, based on the limited data available to us, there may be a discharge to the waters of the State. I am sure that you will agree that a potential release of contaminated water is a matter of extraordinary urgency. The seriousness of the matter compels me to u'rge your'diriect intervention to ensure that every appropriate step is taken to safeguard New Jersey's ptiblic h6alth and'eri';irohnmeiit.

I am pleased that PSEG Nuclear advised us of the problem as soon as it was discovered and that from the outset, PSEG Nuclear and your NRC Region I staiffinvolvcd this Department in characterization of the leak and in review of possible mitigation measures. This level of involvement and cooperation can only serve to strengthen public confidence in the continued safe operation of our nuclear power plants. We greatly appreciate both PSEG Nuclear's and the NRC's interest in our involvement with this issue and look forward to continuing our cooperative relationship.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely, r.*r ia ley M. Campbell.,

I'Commissioner c:
