MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION - NRC EXAMINATION REPORT
50-369/2002-302 AND 50-370/2002-302
Dear Mr. Barron:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), administered a retake of the administrative portion
of the operating examination on July 15, 2002 and a retake of the written examination on
August 29, 2002, to employees of your company who had applied for licenses to operate the
McGuire Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2. The enclosed report documents the examination
results and findings.
The written retake was administered to one Senior Reactor Operator applicant and the
administrative portion of the operating examination was administered to another Senior Reactor
Operator applicant. Both of the Senior Reactor Operator applicants passed their retake
examinations.
There were no Post Examination comments.
No findings of significance were identified.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRCs Rules of Practice, a copy of this letter and its
enclosures will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room
or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRCs document system (ADAMS).

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
ER 05000369-02-302 and ER 05000370-02-302, on 7/15/2002 and 8/29/2002, Duke Energy
Corporation, McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 & 2 licensed operator retake examinations.
The operator licensing initial retake examinations were developed by the McGuire training staff
and administered by NRC examiners in accordance with the guidance of NUREG-1021,
Examiner Standards, Revision 8, Supplement 1. The retake examinations implemented the
operator licensing requirements of 10 CFR §55.41, §55.43, and §55.45. No significant issues
were identified.
The NRC administered the retake of the administrative portion of the operating test on July 15,
2002. The licensee administered the retake of the written examination on August 29, 2002.
The written retake was administered to one Senior Reactor Operator applicant and the
administrative portion of the operating examination was administered to another Senior Reactor
Operator applicant. Both of the Senior Reactor Operator applicants passed their retake
examinations. Both applicants were issued Senior Reactor Operator licenses.

4OA5 Operator Licensing Initial Examinations
a.
Inspection Scope
The McGuire Nuclear Station developed operating tests and written examinations in
accordance with NUREG 1021, Operator Licensing Examination Standards for Power
Reactors, Revision 8, Supplement 1. The NRC examination team reviewed the
proposed examinations. Examination changes agreed upon between the NRC and the
licensee were made according to NUREG-1021 and incorporated into the final version of
the examination materials. The NRC administered the approved retake of the
administrative portion of the operating test on July 15, 2002, to one SRO applicant and
the approved written retake examination on August 29, 2002, to another SRO applicant.
The examiners reviewed the examination security measures to ensure examination
security and integrity.

Issues and Findings
No findings of significance were identified.
Both SRO applicants passed their retake examinations. The licensee did not submit any
post-examination comments concerning the written retake examination. The written
examination and answer key may be accessed in the ADAMS system (ADAMS
Accession Number ML022520008).
