The requested renewal term for License R-56 is for 20 years.

The University of Florida Training Reactor (UFTR) has been operated successfully and safely for over 43 years at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. Periodic improvements have been performed during these years, all of which have contributed substantially to the safe and reliable operation of the facility. Within the present term of the operating license, the entire core was disassembled, inspected and reassembled. In addition, the UFTR has been upgraded with a new pneumatic sample irradiation system, a new temperature monitor/recorder, new control blade position indicators and a new power monitoring detector with another on order. The UFTR continues to be a leading university facility in meeting the administrative and regulatory requirements to operate the facility effectively in a manner to safeguard the health and safety of the public.
