Dear Ms Gibson:

We appreciate the letter of December 20, 2001, in which the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission offered to provide Potassium Iodide (KI) for use by the general public after an emergency at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. After careful review of the new guidance issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Arizona has decided to continue to make KI available to the public if sufficient radioactive iodine is released and the public should ingest it. We are in the process of developing the necessary distribution plan in light of the changed recommendations of FDA. Within ten miles of the plant we have a population of 4':

3,500 persons.

We request that you provide 65 migram tablets, if possible. This size tablet is more convenient to distribute than the 130 milligram tablets. Please arrange for the tablets to be shipped to the Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency, 4814 south 40' Street, Phoenix, AZ 85040.

Thank you and the Commission for your provision of these tablets. While we assume that the nuclear plants will continue to operate without event, we believe we should be prepared should they have a failure.

Sincerely Abrey.Godwi Director CC Governor Hull M. Austin C. Eden, Ph.D.
