Dear Ms. Gibson:
This document is a request by the State of New Jersey to obtain potassium iodide (KI) for distribution to the general public who are located within the 10 mile radius Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) of a nuclear power plant. The State has determined that it will pre-position stocks of KI in selected locations as a supplemental protective action for the populations near the Salem/Hope Creek and Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Stations. The following information is provided in support of New Jersey's request as presented in the NRC's December 20, 2001 correspondence to the New Jersey Commissioner of Environmental Protection.
Based on the population estimates shown in the enclosed table and projected population swells due to seasonal variation, we are requesting a quantity that is sufficient to provide two doses for each person within the EPZs, specifically:
- 1. 520,000 (624,000) doses of 130 milligram (mg) each for adults over 18 years of age;
- 2. 144,000 (173,000) doses of 65 mg each for children between the ages of 5 and 18 years of age;
- 3. 58,000 (70,000) doses of 32 mg each for children under 5 years of age.
New Jersey requests that KI supplies be increased by 20% to allow for development and population growth over a five year period. The numbers in parentheses include the anticipated 20% growth.
It is imperative that the KI tablets be scored to facilitate pill splitting as necessary.

Mar 19 2002 22:35 P.03 Ms. Kathy Halvey Gibson - Page 2 130 mg tablets into smaller doses, and has found that it is impractical to use 130 mg tablets to distribute appropriate doses to the public in a timely manner. This is particularly true for dispensing doses to the most radiosensitive populations (i.e.,
children and infants). New Jersey anticipates that sufficient quantities of the appropriate dosages for each age group identified in the FDA guidance documents will be made available.
