NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION NINE MILE POINT NUCLEAR STATION UNIT #2

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Nine Mile Point Unit Two operated with a capacity factor (MDC) of 43.36% and an availability factor of 45.55% for the month of April 2002.

At the start of this reporting period, Nine Mile Point Unit Two remained in refuel outage RFO-08, which began on March 15, 2002 at 2333 hours0.027 days <br />0.648 hours <br />0.00386 weeks <br />8.877065e-4 months <br />. The reactor mode switch was placed in startup at 0423 hours0.0049 days <br />0.118 hours <br />6.994048e-4 weeks <br />1.609515e-4 months <br /> on April 15, 2002. The reactor was brought critical by 0642 hours0.00743 days <br />0.178 hours <br />0.00106 weeks <br />2.44281e-4 months <br /> on the same day. The main generator was placed in service at 0718 hours0.00831 days <br />0.199 hours <br />0.00119 weeks <br />2.73199e-4 months <br /> on April 17th. Full power Operations was achieved at 1021 hours0.0118 days <br />0.284 hours <br />0.00169 weeks <br />3.884905e-4 months <br /> on April 19th.

On April 19, 2002 at 2148 hours0.0249 days <br />0.597 hours <br />0.00355 weeks <br />8.17314e-4 months <br />, a planned power reduction to 70% was performed for control rod pattern adjustment. Full power operation was resumed at 0913 hours0.0106 days <br />0.254 hours <br />0.00151 weeks <br />3.473965e-4 months <br /> on April 20, 2002.

On April 25, 2002 at 2115 hours0.0245 days <br />0.588 hours <br />0.0035 weeks <br />8.047575e-4 months <br />, an unplanned power change occurred while performing routine transfer of hydraulic power unit subloops on the "A" reactor recirculation flow control valve. After isolating hydraulics to the "A" flow control valve, power was gradually reduced to maintain reactor recirculation loop flow mismatch within Technical Specification limits. Reactor power was stabilized at approximately 87%. The hydraulic power unit (HPU) was returned to service at 1713 hours0.0198 days <br />0.476 hours <br />0.00283 weeks <br />6.517965e-4 months <br /> on April 26h after troubleshooting and testing confirmed acceptable performance from the HPU. Full power operation was achieved at 1848 hours0.0214 days <br />0.513 hours <br />0.00306 weeks <br />7.03164e-4 months <br /> on April 26, 2002.

On April 26, 2002 at 2132 hours0.0247 days <br />0.592 hours <br />0.00353 weeks <br />8.11226e-4 months <br />, a planned power reduction to 80% was performed for a control rod pattern adjustment. The plant was returned to full power at 0800 on April 26, 2002.

There were no challenges to the safety relief valves during this reporting period.
