INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR GENERATING UNIT NO. 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MARCH 14, 2002, ANNUAL ASSESSMENT MEETING WITH ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC.
On March 14, 2002, at 7:00 p.m., a meeting was conducted at Crystal Bay on the Hudson in Peekskill, NY between the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. The purpose of the meeting was for the NRC to provide their annual assessment of Indian Point Unit 2 (IP2) performance, including a discussion related to performance improvement efforts at IP2.
The meeting was opened by Brian Holian, Deputy Director of the Division of Reactor Projects, who noted that this annual assessment meeting summarizes information from a number of regulatory performance meetings held over the past year to review IP2 performance.
Mr. Hubert Miller, Regional Administrator, and Mr. William Kane, Deputy Executive Director for Operations, provided additional opening comments and perspective on IP2 performance and the general topic of nuclear plant security. The NRC briefly summarized past and recent IP2 performance, noting that the plant is being operated safely while Entergy continues with their plans to bring about needed improvements. During their presentation, Entergy described their performance improvement plan including a number of initiatives such as improvements in leadership and in human performance, enhancements in operational focus, and actions to increase accountability. During the meeting, the NRC questioned Entergy on these initiatives and on other future plans.
At the end of the meeting between Entergy and NRC, the public attendees were offered the opportunity to ask questions of NRC officials. Of the approximately 200 members of the public that attended the meeting, approximately 20 individuals asked questions over a two hour period, many of which related to plant security and evacuation issues within the local communities. These questions and comments were addressed by NRC management. Two members of the public asked for certain documents, which were subsequently forwarded to them. Please refer to Accession No. ML020870050 for the presentation slides related to this meeting located in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management Systems (ADAMS).
Sincerely,
/RA/
