Your 1/4/02 application requested that we issue the schedular exemption by 3/31/02. Our review is ongoing and we need additional information. Specifically, your application has not addressed how the operating experience of Nine Mile Point Unit 1 (a BWR/2) can be applied to Unit 2 (a BWR/5). The differences betwen the 2 BWR types are significant in terms of containment design and thermal output. It may be possible to consider the industry-wide BWR/5 type reactor operating experience to make up for Unit 2's lack of enough operating experience.
This e-mail only provides topics for an upcoming conference call. It does not convey a formal request for additional information, and does not state a formal NRC staff position on this issue. We will discuss the disposition of the above issues during the conference call.
