MEETING

SUMMARY

ON THE RESULTS OF CONTROL ROOM IN-LEAKAGE TESTING (TAC NOS. MB3758 AND MB3759)

On February 21, 2002, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) met with Duke Energy (the licensee) to discuss the results of their in-leakage testing of the control room envelope at Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1and 2. The results of the in-leakage testing were used by the licensee for establishing the control room envelope's in-leakage assumption.

The licensee performed both integrated and component testing of the main control room envelope at Catawba Nuclear Station. The component testing consisted of portions of the control room ventilation system ductwork which was external to the control room envelope and ductwork from other systems which penetrate the control room envelope. The integrated test measured the in-leakage for the entire envelope. The integrated test results were hampered because several flows could not be measured accurately due to either the tracer gas ejection point location or inadequate mixing following injection. Thus, the accuracy of the integrated test was questionable.

The staff will utilize the information provided by the licensee in reviewing the licensees application dated December 20, 2001, for partial implementation of an alternate source term at Catawba Nuclear Station.

A list of the meeting attendees is enclosed. The handout provided by the licensee is accessible electronically from the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Public Electronic Reading Room on the internet at the NRC Web site, http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/html by accession number ML020570184. Persons who do not have access to ADAMS or who encounter problems in accessing the documents located in ADAMS, should contact the NRC PDR Reference staff by telephone at 1-800-397-4209 or 301-415-4737, or by e-mail to pdr@nrc.gov.
