Dear Ms. Gibson:
This is the State of Delaware's request to obtain Potassium Iodide (KI) for distribution to the general public. The state has determined that it will use KI as a supplemental protective action for the emergency planning zone populations for the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations.
The following information supports Delaware's request as indicated in the NRC's January 15, 2002 correspondence to the Governor of Delaware.

48,252 35,298 9,742 3,212 David Carlson Delaware Emergency Management Agency 165 Brick Store Landing Road Smyrna, DE 19977 Delaware is requesting that the appropriate dosages be provided for each age group identified in the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance documents. Based on the 2000 Census and increases for population growth estimates, we are requesting 35,298 doses of 130 mg for adults over 18; 9,742 doses of 65 mg for adolescents; and 3,212 doses of 32 mg for children under 5.
In addition, it is imperative that the KI tablets are scored to facilitate pill splitting as necessary.
Delaware feels it is impractical to use 130-mg tablets to distribute appropriate doses to the public in a timely manner. This is particularly true for dispensing doses to the most radiosensitive populations, children and infants.
