SUBJECT:
BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1, 2 AND 3 - MEETING BETWEEN TVA AND THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION (NRC) STAFF REGARDING ALTERNATIVE SOURCE TERM PLANS (TAC NO. MB3631)
On January 16, 2002, the NRC staff met with representatives of TVA, the licensee for the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant (BFN), Units 1, 2 and 3, at the NRC offices in Rockville, Maryland.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possible content of a future amendment to the licenses of BFN Units 1, 2 and 3 for an alternative source term. Enclosure 1 lists the meeting participants. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the handouts that the licensee provided during the meeting.
The planned amendment would adopt an alternative source term for each unit. Justification and implementation would be consistent with NRC Regulatory Guide 1.183, "Alternative Radiological Source Terms for Evaluating Design Basis Accidents at Nuclear Power Reactors."
During the meeting, the NRC staff discussed various aspects of the proposed amendment with the licensee, including plant modifications, analysis techniques, proposed submittals and schedule. The license amendment request is scheduled for submission in May 2002.
