Dear Mr. Meserve:

As you are aware, efforts are underway by the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant, located in Lacey Township, New Jersey, to provide temporary storage of spent fucl rods in above-ground casks beginning in April, 2002, until approved facilities in Nevada are available for use. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) proposes to approve the dry cask storage system under the plant's general operating license without the process of a public hearing.

Considering the proposed storage site's proximity to vehicular traffic on Route 9, an extremely busy thoroughfare, and in consideration of the possible threat of terrorism under which we find ourselves living since September 11, I have been contacted by both individual constituents and the governments of Ocean County and 28 of its municipalities to request that a public hearing be held concerning this proposal.

Therefore, I respectfully request that a public hearing be held as soon as possible in Ocean County, New Jersey at which this very sensitive, and extremely important issue can be discussed.

I look forward to hearing from you with regard to a public hearing and request that your staff contact my District Director, Sandra Condit, at the number indicated below to discuss this situation. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

,ncerely, im Saxton HSv ember of Congress 1-liS/mac cc:
