Dear Chairman Meserve:

While currently performing your "top to bottom" review of our nation's nuclear power plants, I encourage you to adopt stronger standards for housing the spent fuel rods at the Indian Point facility in Buchanan, New York.

I urge you to mandate that Indian Point's owner and operator Entergy Nuclear Northeast improve the present steel-roofed structure that houses the spent fuel rod pool.

Upon completion of the security review, I request that you inform the public that standards have been increased at Indian Point and that a more robust structure will house the spent fuel rods.

Thank you for your attention to an issue that is of great concern to those who live and work near Indian Point. We feel vulnerable and want your agency to give us greater reassurance about the facility's enhanced security and safety.

Sincerely, Sandy Galef Member of the Assembly cc: Michael Kansler Senior Vice President & Chi-ef Operating Officer Entergy Nuclear Northeast ALBANY OFFICE: Room 540, Legislative Office Building, Albany, New York 12248, (518) 455-5348, FAX (518) 455-5728 DISTRICT OFFICE; 2 Church Street, Ossining, New York 10562, (914) 941-1111, FAX (914) 941-9132 E-MAIL: galefs@assembly.state.ny.us WEBSITE. w,*w.assembly-state.ny.us 0

Dear Mr,

Kansler:

I am requesting that you upgrade the steel roofed structure that houses the spent fuel rod pool at the Indian Point nuclear facility in Buchanan to help ease our concerns in the wake of the September 11 tragedy.

I understand that the NRC is undergoing a top to bottom review of security at the plant that includes an evaluation of the spent fuel rods and how they are housed.

What I am asking is that Entergy take early action and commit to a more robust structure to enhance the facility containing the spent fuel rods so that residents can feel less vulnerable.

Please give speedy attention to this issue and let us all know that you have agreed to take such action to give us further protection.

Sincerely, Sandy Galef Member of the Assembly cc: Chairman Richard Meserve U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ALBANY OFFICE: Room 540, Legislative Office Building, Albany, New York 12248, (518) 455-5348, FAX (518) 455-5728 DISTRICT OFFICE: 2 Church Street, Ossining, New York 10562, (914) 941-1111, FAX (914) 941-9132 E-MAIL-galefs@assembly.state.ny.us WEBSITE: www.assembly.state.ny.us 0'
