CESSAR SER Confirmatory Item Number 12
Dear Mr. Eisenhut:
Enclosed please find our report responding to Confirmatory Item 12 of the CESSAR SER. This item addresses iodine control in nuclear reactor containment buildings which use the hydrazine spray system. The report contains contain-ment spray operating guidelines and supporting chemical analyses resolving concerns over the effectiveness of the hydrazine system in controlling airborne iodine inside containment.
Combustion Engineering met with the NRC Staf f on March 9,1982 to discuss concerns on long term iodine control. As a result of that meeting, we revised CESSAR interface requirements and analyses on long term hydrazine behavior and submitted them in draft form for comment. Resolution of NRC concerns regarding containment sampling and the radiolysis of hydrazine have been addressed and incorporated in the enclosed package.
