The following is a summary of information received from the
Arkansas Department of Health (the Department) via email:
On March 2, National Salvage and Service contacted the Department to report that the radioactive material had been found. Photographs show an Alnor Dewpointer, serial number 13649. Inside the device's case is a radioactive warning label indicating 2,945 Becquerels (6.25 microcuries) of Ra-226 in powder form, contained inside a screw canister. The canister was unopened and appears undamaged from the scrapping process. National Salvage and Service has bagged the device and placed it in a labeled container.
This source did not appear on any Arkansas GL license records for the site from which the abandoned source was collected (the Tenneco plant, which closed in 2025), and it is believed to have been manufactured prior to regulatory requirements. National Salvage and Service is working toward disposal solutions. The Department will provide an update when the material has been safely relocated.
