3 The plant tripped as a result of a protective relay in the switch yard that mis-operated during the cycling of the power supply through a relay contact. The power supply spike caused the main plant output breaker to open which in turn tripped the turbine and resulted in a reactor trip.
Design modifications of the protective relay scheme have been implemented to prevent recurrence.
SUMMARY
Crystal River Unit 3 experienced a plant trip this month due to equipment in the 500 KV switch yard.
