Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 2 Docket No. 50-368 License No. NPF-6 Request To Use ASME Section IX Code Cases 2142-1 And 2143-1 Gentlemen:

)

In accordance with the provisions of 10CFR50.55a(a)(3), Entergy Operations Incorporated -

(Entergy) requests approval to use American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Cases 2142-1 and 2143-1 on the Reactor Coolant System for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (ANO-2).

Entergy is in the process of fabricating replacement steam generators for installation on our ANO-2 facility. The replacement steam generators will be using Alloy 690 clad material which has been proven to be more corrosion resistant than Alloy 600 for RCS applications.

The application of Nickel-Chromium-Iron (Ni-Cr-Fe) welding materials similar to Alloy 690 is i

necessaiy in the fabrication and installation of the replacement steam generators. Code Case 2142-1 specifies the alternative rule requirements which may be applied to grouping UNS N06052 Ni-Cr-Fe weld filler metal and Code Case 2143-1 specifies the alternative rule requirements which may be applied to grouping UNS W86152 Ni-Cr-Fe welding electrodes.

These welding materials provide a better weld interface with Alloy 690. The original Code Cases 2142 and 2143 were approved by ASME in 1992; and were subsequently revised in June 1995 with no substantive change.

These welding materials provide a superior level of safety and quality in their ability to provide an improved corrosion resistance similar to Alloy 690. The. application of these code cases will permit ANO-2 to use welding procedures and performance qualifications previously qualified for F-No. 43 materials for the fabrication of our replacement steam generators without any compromise in the level of quality or safety to the RCS.
