SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 10CFR50 A Request (ppendix R Exemption Zone 38-Y)

Dear Mr. Calvo:

In our letter dated April 22,1987 (ICAND48708) AP&L proposed to revise our i

I exemption request for the AN0-1 EFW pump room (Zone 38-Y) to credit partial suppression in the room. This suppression would provide protection to the turbine driven EFW pump.

During the AN0-1 Fire Protection audit held during the week of May 4,1987, additional design details were discussed with members of your staff.

As a result of these discussions AP&L is providing further information concerning the design of the partial suppression in the EFW pump room. This suppression would protect the turbine driven EFW pump and would be designed to those sections of NFPA-15, 1985 Edition described in the attachment to this letter. Additionally, the portions of cabling necessary to provide automatic operation of the turbine driven EFW pump which are outside the spray area but inside the EFW pump room will be wrapped in a one-hour rated fire barrier.

Also, as the automatic operation of either pump is now credited, the exemption for the ANO-1 EFW pump room needs to be modified.

The power cabling for the electric driven EFW pump is in the corridor in Zone 34-Y.

I The control cabling for the turbine driven EFW pumps is in Zone 20-Y.

The cabling is separated by no less than 26 feet with the only intervening l

in-situ combustibles consisting of a monorail with an isolated cable run to e707150318 870624 b

i a small electric motor. Area wide detection covers these cables.

Therefore, we request that the exemption for lack of suppression for the EFW pump room be expanded to include the EFW pump cabling located in zones 20-Y

{

and 34-Y.

This would be similar to an exemption granted in this same area j

for the Makeup and Decay Heat Removal pump power cables.

Based upon your approval of this exemption request the required modifications will be scheduled to be performed during the upcoming 1R8 outage.

Very truly yours, o
