SUBJECT:

CERTIFICATION BOARD OF NUCLEAR ENDOCRINOLOGY, REVIEW OF SPECIALTY BOARD CONTINUED RECOGNITION BY THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

Dear Eric A. Orzech:

I am writing to request confirmation that the Certification Board of Nuclear Endocrinology (CBNE) continues to satisfy the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recognition criteria for specialty board certification processes. The NRC is reaching out to all its recognized specialty boards per the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS) Office Procedure1 70-3, Procedures for Recognizing, Monitoring, and Terminating the Certification Process of Specialty Boards, Section 3.1, Monitoring Continued Satisfaction of Recognition Requirements. Subsequent reviews will be performed on a 5-year basis.

As part of this review, the NRC staff will evaluate the recognized boards publicly available Web site for changes that could affect the recognition of the boards certification process(es). The staff will determine if the boards certification program continues to meet the applicable criteria for recognition of board certifications, as established in the NRC regulations.

To ensure that each specialty board continues to meet the NRC requirements in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 352, Medical Use of Byproduct Material, please respond in writing within 30 days of the date of this letter and address the following:

1) Confirm the specialty boards current name.
2) Confirm the name of the specialty certification(s) or certificates.
3) Confirm that the specialty board still satisfies the board recognition criteria in:
a. 10 CFR 35.190, "Training for uptake, dilution, and excretion studies."
b. 10 CFR 35.392, "Training for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities less than or equal to 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries)."

1 The NMSS Office Procedure MSST-70-3, Procedures for Recognizing, Monitoring, and Terminating the Certification Process of Specialty Boards, is available for review at:

https://www.nrc.gov/docs/ML2035/ML20351A389.pdf.

2 The 10 CFR Part 35 index is available for review at: https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/cfr/part035/index.html.

c. 10 CFR 35.394, "Training for the oral administration of sodium iodide I-131 requiring a written directive in quantities greater than 1.22 gigabecquerels (33 millicuries)."
4) Confirm that there have been no changes in the boards certification procedures that could affect the recognition status.
5) Confirm that the enclosed certificates are current.

The board does not need to generate any new documents to support your response. Please submit your response on official letterhead and signed (physically or electronically) by a person authorized to speak for the board (i.e., its chief executive officer or designee). Please send your letter as an e-mail attachment to the staff contacts below, and the NRC will ensure it is captured as an official record.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding, a copy of this letter, along with your response letter, will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System, accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.
