PROGRAM SCOPE This was an unannounced, routine inspection of Purdue University's SNM license. The licensee possessed material under this license for research and student instruction. The licensee's authorization included various percent enriched uranium fuel rods; pellets, sources, and samples; natural uranium; a PuBe subcritical assembly; and various sources used in a Fast Breeder Blanket Facility (FBBF). The FBBF had been in secured storage since the previous inspection.

The Radiological and Environmental Management (REM) office conducted source inventories and area surveys in accordance with the terms of the license. Access to all materials was restricted to authorized members of the REM and users within the Physics and Nuclear Engineering departments. In May 2018, the licensee transferred all the sources under this license to DOE. The inspectors reviewed the survey and transfer records.

The inspection included a review of the licensee's reporting to NMMSS in accordance with the procedures described in EGM 08-002. This inspection consisted of tours of the FBBF and material storage rooms, a review of select records, interviews with licensee staff, and independent surveys.

No violations ofNRC requirements were identified during this inspection.
