SUMMARY OF PUBLIC SCOPING MEETING CONDUCTED RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THE PROPOSED NORTHWEST MEDICAL ISOTOPES, LLC RADIOSOTOPE PRODUCTION

FACILITY

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted an environmental scoping meeting related to the review of the proposed Northwest Medical Isotopes, LLC (NWMI) radioisotope production facility. NWMI submitted a portion of its construction permit application by letter dated February 5, 2015. The scoping meeting was conducted on December 8, 2015, at the Holiday Inn Columbia-East in Columbia, Missouri. Michael Balazik, safety project manager, presented an overview of NRC's regulatory oversight and mission, content and format of the NWMI construction permit application, proposed technology, and the safety review of the NWMI application that NRC staff will conduct. Nancy Martinez, environmental project manager, presented an overview of the environmental review process, provided information as to how comments can be submitted, and where the NWMI construction permit application can be reviewed. Forty-three people attended the meeting. The attendees included members of the NRC staff, members of the public, news media, and local, State, and Federal government officials. Public comments expressed the benefits of constructing and operating the proposed facility, mostly focusing on economic development and job growth.
