3/4.9.8SHUTDOWNCOOLINGANDCOOLANTCIRCULATION Therequirement thatatleastoneshutdowncoolingloopbeinoperation ensuresthat(1)sufficient coolingcapacityisavailable toremovedecayheatandmaintainthewaterinthereactorpressurevesselbelow140'FasrequiredduringtheREFUELING MODE,and(2)sufficient coolantcirculation ismain-tainedthroughthereactorcoretominimizetheeffectsofaborondilutionincidentandpreventboronstratification.

Therequirement tohavetwoshutdowncoolingloopsOPERABLEwhenthereislessthan23feetofwaterabovethereactorpressurevesselflangewithirradiated fuelinthecoreensuresthatasinglefailureoftheoperating shutdowncoolingloopwillnotresultinacompletelossofdecayheatremovalcapability.

Withthereactorvesselheadremovedand23feetofwaterabovethereactorpressurevesselflangewithirradiated fuelinthecore,alargeheatsinkisavailable forcorecooling,thusintheeventofafailureoftheoperating shutdowncoolingloop,adequatetimeisprovidedtoinitiateemergency rocedures tocoolthecore.happ4/3/4.9.9CONTAINMENT ISOLATION SYSTEMpgjggAP~TheOPERABILITY ofthissystemensuresthatthecontainment isolation 84'gag'$valveswillbeautomatically isolatedupondetection ofhighradiation leves1withinthecontainment.
