FINALRHPOR'I'NSTRUMENTA'I'IONNINEMIIHPOINT-UNIT2SCRIBA,NHWYORI<NIAGARA'MOIRAWKPOWERCORPOR'ATIONINTRODUCTIONThisisthefinalreportontheinstrumentationinstalledatNineMilePoint,Unit2toevaluaterockmassmovement.DatapresentedinthisreportarethroughFebruary1985.ThepreviousreportdatedSeptember7,1984(DN-L1612)analyzeddataavailablethroughJuly1984.AreportdatedMay18,1984(DN-L1583)provideddataandanalysisthroughMarch1984.PriortothatreporttheFSAR(Section2.5.4.13)provideddatathrough1981andtheresponsetoQ361.5provideddatafromthedateofinstallationthrough1980.Theinstruments,wheninstalled,servedmanypurposesrelatingtothegeologiccriteriaasitwasdevelopedthroughthedesignprocess.Theinstrumentsmaintainedthroughthecompletionoftheprogramservedtoconfirmtheadequacyofthesecriteria.ThecriteriaasestablishedweresummarizedinourlettersofJanuary16,1981(DN-L0802),May1,1981(DN-L0826),andMay15,1981(DN-L0859).SUMMARYANDCONCLUSIONSTheinstrumentationprogramwasbegunatNineMilein1977whenfourinclinometerswereinstalledtomonitortherockmass.Sincethattimetherockinstrumentationhasconsistedoffourstressmeters,25inclinometers(includingthefirstfour),11extensometers,7piezometers,and14displacementsensors.Whilerockmovementshavebeenrecordedinseveraloftheinstruments,thenatureofthesemovements(magnitude,direction,rate)hasbeensuchthatweconcludethatthedesigncriteriaestablishedforrockmovementaresufficientandwillnotbeexceededduringtheprojectedlifeofthefacility.BecausethelengthoftimeofthereadingcyclehasbeensuchthatfuthermonitoringoftheinstrumentationisexpectedtoyieldlittleadditionalinformationrelativetothesafetyofthestructuresonsitethemonitoringprogramwasconcludedinFebruaryin1985.
DISCUSSIONINCLINOMHTHRSFinaldepthdisplacementprofilesforallinclinometersoperationalpastthetimeofthelastprogressreport(July1984)areprovidedinFigures4through18.Inaddition,tiine-disp'lacementandvectortraceplotsareprovidedforspecificzonesinwhichinovementshavebeennoted.Thesefiguresateintroducedduringdiscussionofthespecificinclinometers.RadwasteThrustStructureFourRadwasteinclinometers(805,806,820,821)remainedaccessibleandweremonitoredtotheendofthemonitoringprogram.Inclinometer810wasmonitoreduntilNovember1984whenitbecameinaccessiblebecauseoficeinthecasing.TheseinclinometershavebeenreadsinceMay/June1980(805,806,810)andNovember1981(820,821)andprovidearecordofmorethanfouryearsoftherockmassthatcomprisestheRadwasteThrustStructure.Generally,analysisoftherecordsoftheradwasteinclinoinetershaverevealedthreetypesofmovements-cyclicseasonalchanges,smalllong-termdisplacements,anddisplacementsapparentlyassociatedwiththeriseinwaterlevelatthesite.CclicDislacements:ThecyclicdisplacementsarebestillustratedfromtherecordsofInclinometer803(Figure14)whereagradualsouthwestwarddisplace-mentwasrecordedintherocksofthetransitionzonesbetweenelevations222and226feet.AsshownonFigure20,themostrapiddisplacementsinthiszoneoccurredinthesummei'onths(June,July,August).Thesedisplacementswerepartiallyreversedduringthewinter,buttheunrecoveredornetdisplacementoccurredatanannualrateof0.6+0.2millimeters(mm)fortheperiodofmonitoring.Interestingly,thedisplacementceasedinSeptembei1981whentheRadwastetrenchwasfilledwithconcrete.Whilethestrengthoftheconcreteitselfisinsufficienttostopthemovements,itisbelievedthatthefillingofthetrenchcut-offthesourceofwaterthathadaccesstotheRadwasteslipplanes(intersectedin803)bymovingdownthedipofthestiucturefromtheRadwastetrench.Thishydrologicconnectionbetween
theRadwastetrenchandtheslipplanesin803alsohelpstoexplaintheseasonal(temperature-related)fluctuationintherockatadepthofalmost30feetbelowthegroundsurface.Warmerwater,collectedandlocatedintheRadwastetrench,wasabletomovedowndipalongthebrokenzonesoftheRadwasteThrustStructure.Thiswaterwarmedtherockmasscausingathermalexpansionduringthesummermonths.TheupperunitsoftherockmassmovedalongtheweakplanesoftheRadwastestructureandtowardtheopenexcavationtothesouthproducingnetdisplacementtowardsthesouthwest.Astherockmasscooledduringthewintermonths(eitherfromthecolderwaterorlackofwater)itpartiallyrecoveredthedisplacement.llowever,itissuspectedthatthefabricoftheRadwasteThruststructure(transport'tothewest)preventedthefullrecoveryandresultedinthenetdisplacementtothesouthwest.Lon-TermDislacements:Thelong-termdisplacementsintheRadwasteThrustStructurehavebeenillustratedwiththedisplacementsrecordedatEleva-tion215feetininclinometers805,810and821(Figures2l,22,and23).Themaximumdisplacementmeasuredinthiszoneisfrom810whereapproximately1.75mmofmovementhasbeenrecordedoverthe4.5yearsofmonitoring.Althoughthedisplacementwithtimealongthiszonehasnotbeenuniform,thestartoftheseverysmalldisplacementswasinitiallyrecordedbeforeanyriseinthesitewaterlevelsandthezoneofmovementisgenerallyabovethelevelofwater.Therefore,thedisplacementsareattributedtominoradjustmentsalongtheRadwastestructure.Neitherthe.magnitudenotthedirection(north)ofthesemovementswillaffectexistingstructuresatthesite.ThemostsignificantmovementdetectedintheRadwasteinclinometersoccursatElevation244ininclinometer806(Pigure24).Atthislocationalmost3.5mmofdisplacementhaveoccurredsincetheinclinometerwasfirstmonitoredinJulyof1980.Thedisplacementswereveryminoratfirst,totallyonlyabout0.1mmbySeptemberof1981,but,sinceOctober1981therateofdisplacementhasincreasedandhasaveragedslightlyover1mm/yrsincethattime.Alinearprojectionofthisrateoverthe40yearlifeofthefacilitywouldexceedthedesigncriteriafortheRadwastestructure,however,thelocationofinclinometer806andthenorthwestdirectionofmovementprecludethesemovementsfromaffectingtheplantstructures.Additionally,inclinometer805isdirectlybetween806andthereactorexcavationanditdoesnotshowasimilardisplacementatthiselevation.Similarly,inclinometer810
totheeastof806,hasnotrecordeddisplacementatthiselevation.Theisolatednatureandshallowdepthofthedisplacementrecordedin806suggestthatthedisplacementstemsfromalocaldisturbanceot'xcavationnearthetopofbedrock.Hventhoughnosuchconditionhasbeenidentifiedthemovementsin806are>>otconsideredsignificanttothelongtet'mstabilityoftheexcavations.lliseinWaterLevels:MovementsrelatedtotheriseinwaterlevelatthesitecanbefoundontherecotdsofInclinometers806,820,821(Figures25,26,and27).Thesedisplacementsalloccut'ithinHlevation89and97feetandthertetdisplacetnentresultsintheupperblockbeingtransportedtothenorthwestorwest-northwest.Themovementsbeginearlyin1983coincidentwiththeriseirtwaterlevelintheshaft(fromelevation125feettobetweenelevations200and220feet)a>>dinthereactotexcavation(fromElevation1G3feettoelevation20Gfeet).Irttheintervening26months,thiszonehasproducedanaverageyearlydisplacementofbetween0.33mm(806)and0.50mm(820).Significantly,820and821locatedwithinapproxhnately15feetofeachothethavenearlyidenticalaveragedisplacetnents(0.50mmand0.46mmrespectively)and806,located.another400feetinthecast(fattherfromtherewateringpoint)showstheleastreactiontothetewatet'ing.TheeffectsoftheJuly1984riseinwaterlevelinthescreenwallbuildingtoelevation230feetmaybedetectedasaslightincreaseintherateofdisplacementinthetltreeinclino!neters.Itispostulatedthatthedisplacementsrecordedin806,820and821maybetlteresultoftheriseinwatet'evelproducingabuoyancyeffect(reducingtheeffectivenormalstress).ThiscoupledwiththeH-WdirectionofthemaximumcompressivestressandthepronottncedfabricdevelopedontheRadwastestructureresultsinsmail,irreversi-bledisplacelnentstowardsthewest-northwest.hconservativestraight-linepro-jectionofthemaximumrateofdisplacement(0.50mm/yr)overa40yearperiodresultsinatotaldisplacement(20.0mm)thatislessthanthedesigncriteriaestablishedfortheltadwastestructure.Inconclusion,themonitoringofthel<adwasteinclhtometersltasshownthatareasoftheRadwastestructurecanbesensitivetofluctuationsinwaterlevelsandtemperatures.Thesefluctuationscandisturbthebalanceofthestt'ucturea)tdcanresultinmovementsthattakeadvantageoftheestablishedfabricofthestructure.
Despitethissensitivitytothechanges,monitoringhasdemonstratedthatthenatureandmagnitudeofthemovements,evenifprojectedtothefull40yearsofexpectedplantlife,arewithintheestablisheddesigncriteria.IntakeShaftAtthecloseofthemonitoringprogramonlyfiveinclinometers(SI-2,SI-6,SI-8,SI-9andSI-10)remainedaccessibleintheintakeshaftarea.Threeoftheseinclinometers(SI-8,SI-9,RSI-10)weremonitoringtherockmassbetweenthetwocirculatingwatertunnelsandtwo(SI-2andSI-6)arelocatedwestoftheintakeshaft.Themonitoringoftheintakeshaftinclinometershasdemonstratedthreedistincttypesofbedrockmovement;elasticresponsetoexcavationoftheshaftandtunnels,deformationinresponsetorisesinwaterlevels,andtisane-dependentdefor>nation.displacement-depthprofileofinclinometerSI-6(Figure6)whichclearlyshowsthemovementoftherockmassinresponsetotheexcavationofthenorthtunnelatanelevationofapproximately140feet.Atadistanceofapproximately40feetfromthetunneltheinclinometerhasrecordedupto9.75mm(0.384inches)ofmovement.Thismovementinitiatedimmediatelyaftertheexcavationofthatsectionofthetunnel.Becausethistypeofmovementoccursinresponsetoexcavationandtherockmassadjuststothenewstressconditionsbeforeanystructuresarecompletedwithintheexcavation,itisnotconsideredasdeterimentaltothesafetyofthefacility.RiseinWaterLevels:Deformationinresponsetorisesinwaterlevelsareevidentonthetime-dependentplotsofalltheinclinometersthatweremonitoreduntiltheendofthemonitoringperiod.Allshowanabruptriseindisplacementnearthebeginningof1983whentheintakeshaftwasfloodedandmostillustrateasmallincreaseintherateofdisplacementafterJuly1984whenthewaterlevelintheshaftwasallowedtoriseagain.Theincreaseindisplacementrateisoftenabrupt,butgenerallythisratepersistsforlessthantwomonthsbeforereturningtoasteady-levelofnodisplacementorverysmalllongtermdisplacement.Thetime-displacementplotforelevation16l167feetinInclinometerSI-10illustratesthiseffect(Figure29).Afterinstallationinlate1981,SI-10didnotexperienceanysignificantdisplacementalong
thiszoneuntiltheperiodfromJanuarytoMarch1983whentherewasanetdisplacementof0.38mminresponsetothefloodingoftheshaft.PromMarch1983toJune1984thenetdisplacementonlyincreasedby0.06mm.FromJunetoAugust1984,thedisplacementincreasedfromby0.58mminresponsetotheriseinwaterlevelandbetweenAugust1984andPebruary1984thedisplacementhasonlybeen0.08mm.Becauseitisclearthatthesedisplacementsaredirectlyattributabletowaterlevelchanges,theyarenotconsideredtobedetrementaltothesafetyofthesitestructures.Time-DeendentDeformation:Time-dependentdeformationintheintakeshalfinclinometerisillustratedinthetime-displacementplotsofSI-8(Figure30)andSI-9(Figure3l).Belowadepthof57feet,inclinometerSl-8showsaslowdisplacementtowardsthesouthwest.BetweenlateDecember1981andFebruary1983thiszonedisplaced0.30mm(approximately0.26mm/year)andthissamezonedisplacedby0.33mmbetweenMarch1983andJune1984(also0.26mm/yr).Similarly,inclinometerSI-9demonstratesaslow,timedependentdeformationbelowadepthof63feet.BetweenMarch1983andSeptember1984,thisareabelow63feetmovedtowardthesouthby0.50mm(annualrateof0.33mm/yr).Conservativelyassumingastraightlineprojectionover40years,thiswouldamounttoatotaldisplacementrangingbetween10.56mmand13.33mm,wellbelowthedesignlimitofoneinchforrocksqueeze.ReactorExcavationOfthefourinclinometersinstalledspecificallytomonitortherockmassinthevicinityofthereactorexcavation(SI-20,SI-21,SI-22,SI-23)onlySI-23hasrecordedanydiscernablemovement.Threeoftheinclinometers(SI-20,SI-21andSI-23)weremonitoreduntilFebruary1985andSI-22wasmonitoreduntilOctober1984.ThedisplacementinSI-23(Pigure32)consistsofawestwardbulgebetweenthedepthsof50and130feet(Elevations202and122).Thisbulgeappearstoreachamaximumatadepthofapproximately100feet(Elevation152)belowthegroundsurfaceandtheattainedamaximumdisplacementofapproximate0.90mminthe39monthsthattheinclinometerhasbeenmonitored.
I Althoughthetimeperiodoverwhichtherateofdisplacementsfromthiszonehasbeenirregular,ifitwasassumedthatthe0.50mmofmovementoccurredinalinearfashionfromthedateofinstallation,therateofdisplacementwouldbe0.28mm/yrandthe40yearprojectionwould,be11.08mmsignificantlybelowthedesigncriteriaofoneinch.EXTHNSOMETERSGeneralAseriesofextensometershadbeeninstalledatthesitetomonitorverticalchangesintherockmass.Theseextensometerswereplacedintwoareas:eastofthereactorexcavationandaroundtheintakeshaft.Fourverticalextensometers(EI-1,EX-5,HX-6,andEX-20)andoneinclinedextensometerHEX-2werereaduntiltheendofthemonitoringprogram.ExtensometerdataarepresentedonFigures33to41.Generally,theextensometers(withtheexceptionofHHX-2)wereinstalled~~~~tomonitorverticalchangesintherockmassresultingfromtheraisingofthewaterleveLThischangeinvolume,termed'rockswell',hadbeenobservedinrockcoresextractedfromboringsatthesite.Designlimitsforrockswellhavebeenestablishedas0.05%oftheheightoftherockcolumnbeingresaturated.Asanexample,ifthewaterlevelrisesfromElevation200to210feetatoneparticularlocation,thedesigncriteriaallowsforatotalverticalswellatthatpointof.0005feet.ReactorExcavationExtensometerEX-20(Figures39A-39F)locatedapproximately20feeteastofthereactorexcavation,istheonlyextensometerinthevicinityofthereactorexcavation.ReadingofEX-20beganinlate1981andcontinueduntilearly1985whenthemonitoringprogramwasdiscontinued.Ingeneral,themonitoringatEX-20demonstratedthattherockunitsintersectingthereactorexcavationarerelativelystableandnotsubjecttosevereswellingtheonlynoticeablevariationsinreadingshavebeenintheupper15feetofrockthatresponsestoseasonaltemperaturechanges.
BeginninginMay1984,anumberofanamoulousreadingswererecorded.Thereadingsofthesubsequentmonthsfluctuatedwidelyandcharacteristicallyshowedoppositemovementbetweenadjacentzones.Thisisindicativeofmovementontheintervening(orcommon)anchoranditwassuspectedthatanchorslippagehadoccurred.Becausethereadingscontinuedtofluctuate,theextensometerwasdismantledandinspectedattheendofthemonitoringprogram.Thisinspectionconfirmedthesuspicionofanchorslippageasalltheanchorswereeasilyremovedwithonlymoderateupliftforceontherods.Consequently,allreadingsfromMay1984ateconsideredinvalidandhavenotbeenutilizedinanyassessmentofthepotentialforverticalswellatthesite.BelowthebottomofthereactorexcavationinEX-20,twozones(6-7and7-8)recordedasmalllong-termexpansion.Inthe30monthsofmonitoringuptoMay1984,zone6-7(Elevation127-92feet)recordedapproximately0.015inchesofexpansionandzone7-8(elevation92-54feet)recorded0.019inchesofexpansion.Intotal,the197.6feetofrockcolumnbetweentheextensometerheadandthebottomanchorexpandedby0.067inchesbetweenDecember1981andMay1984.Ilowever,themajorityofthisexpansion(0.034ofthe0.067inches)occursbelowelevation127feetwhichisbelowthebaseofthereactorexcavationand0.033inchesofthetotalexpansionisattributabletotheupperrockzone(elevation251-237feet)whereseasonalfluctuationsareevident.Infact,the0.033inchesmeasuredfortheuppermostzoneismisleadingbecauseitcomparesaperiodofhighexpansion(May)tothemonththattypicallyhasthelowestvalues(December).Anexaminationoftherecordindicatesthattakingintoaccounttheseasonalfluctuations,thiszonehasnotexpanded.Consequently,itcanbeconcludedthattherockmassinthevicinityofthereactorexcavationsisfreeofsignificantverticalvolumechanges.Onlytherockunitsbelowthedepthofexcavationareexperiencinganymeasureablechangesandtheseareverysmall.IntakeShaftOfthesevenextensometersinstalledintheareaoftheintakeshaft,three(HX-1,HX-5andEX-6)weremonitoreduntilthecndoftheinstrumentationmonitoringprogram.Overall,extensometerEX-1showedagradualcompressionof
therockmassfromthetimeofitsinstallation(December1979)untilthebeginningof1983whentheshaftwasflooded.Sincethattime,theverticalextentofthemeasuredrockmasshasremainedfairlyconsistentwithonlyaslightextensioninthezonebetweenelevations172and130feetandacorrespondingslightcompressioninthezonebetweenelcvations130and97feet.Overall,EX-1hasexperiencedatotalvolumereductionofapproximately0.040inchesoveritslengthof164feet.Thisreductionisattributabletothedryingoutoftherockcolumnduringthedewateringphase.Sincethefloodingoftheshaftthecolumnhasnotexpandedbuthasheldconstant.ExtensometersHX-5andEX-6,locatedontheeastbenchofthe"intakeshafthaveshownsimilarbehavior-predominantlyinfluencedbytherisesinwaterlevelintheshaft.TheeffectoftheriseinwaterlevelinJanuary1983isillustratedinHX-5wherethezonesbetweenelevation214and133feetexpandednoticably.AboveElevation214feettherockremaineddryandcontinuedshrinking.Below133feettherockinitiallycontractedthenexpandedslighltybeforeremainingfairlyconstantuntilJune1984whenthewaterlevelwasraisedagain.ThisraisingofthewaterlevelinJune1984isapparentinbothHX-5andHX-6,particularlyinthezonebetweenelevaitons173and133feet.SinceJune1984thiszonehasexpandedby0.027(HX-6)and0.030(EX-5)incheswithmostoftheexpansioninthefirstmonthandtherateofexpansiondecreasingrapidlywithtime.Thereislittledoubtthattherockmassatthesiteisaffectedbythepresenceofwater.Theloweringofthewatertableproducesanoticeabledryingandshrinkageoftherockcolumnandthereapplicationofwaterallowstherockunitstoexpand.lkowever,themonitoringhasshowntheswellingtobefairlyrapidwiththerateofexpansiondecreasingrapidlywithtime.INCLINEDEXTENSOMHTERNeitherHHX-1norHHX-2hasdemonstratedanysignificantmovementoftheserockmassattheirlocations.HHX-2doesillustratesomenearsurfacetemperaturefluctuationsandaseasonalfluctuationatadepthof84to91feetwhetetheRadwastethruststructureisencountered.ItissuspectedthatgroundwatermovingaongthefracturedrockoftheRadwastestructurereachesthiszoneandcausesittoexpandorcontractdependingontherelativetemperaturesoftherockand
water.ThisreactionwaspreviouslyencounteredinInclinometer803whereitintersectedtheRadwastestructure.GAPGAUGESTheprogramformonitoringthestructuralgapsbetweenCategoryIstructuresbeganinthefallof1981.Atotalof14gaugelocationsweremonitored,manywithmultipleinstruments.Theresultsofthemonitoringarepresentedin(Figures42to55).Inmostofthelocations,thedisplacementnormaltothereactorcontainmentismeasuredbut,inseveralinstances(G2A,G3S,G4S),ashearcoinponentisalsomonitored.Ingeneral,allofthegapgaugesprovidesimilarresults:acyclicvariationofthegapwidthinphasewithseasonaltemperaturevariations.GapgaugesG-SAandG-5Bprovidealmostidenticalresultsdespitethefactthattheyarelocatedatoppositeendsofthereactorexcavation.This,coupledwiththefactthatthereadingsateproportionallyidenticaltothetemperaturesindicatesthereisnonetclosure(oropening)inthenorth-southdirection.Movementintheeast-westdirectioncanbestbededucedfromexamina-tionoftheG1seriesofgauges.GaugeGl-8hasbeenmonitoredforthelongestperiod(sinceNovember1981).Becausetheseasonaltemperaturevariationshavebeendampedasaresultofenclosureoftheareanearthegauges,thereadingshavebeenfluctuatingaroundanewbaselevelsincetheearlysummerof1982.Giventhisnewbaseline,thereadingsdonotindicateanetclosureofthegap.ThesameobservationcanbemadewithgaugesG6andGID.Asdiscussedinpreviousreports,whenconsideredinconjunctionwiththeaccomplanyingnormalgauges,thesheargaugesdonotindicateanysignificantmovementsorclosureofthegapbetweentherockexcavationandtheplantstructures.OverallthegapgaugesprovideadetailedmonitoringofthestructuralgapprovidedforinthedesignofNineMilePointUnit2.Thismonitoringhasdemonstratedthattheadequacyofthegapdesign.10
PiezometersFourpiezometersweremonitoreduntiltheendofthemonitoringprogram.PiezometersPI-l,PI-2,PI-4andPI-5recordedthewaterlevelchangesintheareaoftheintakeshaft(PI-4wasdiscontinuedinOctober,1984)andPX-20monitoredthewaterlevelstotheeastofthereactorexcavation.PI-20indicatesthat.thewaterlevelinthisareahasremainedconstantofaboutelevation185feet.WaterlevelsrecordedbypiezometersPI-l,PI-2,PI-4,PI-5,PI-20,andPI-21areshowninTablel.Thepiezometerswereusedinthisprogramtodocumentthechangesinwaterlevelsatthesiteandprovidedinputtotheinter-pretationoftheotherinstrumentsdata.Nospecificdesignrelatedcriteriaareappliedtothemonitoringofthepiezometersthemselves.
