Subject:

Dresden, Quad-Cities, and Zion Stations NRC IE Bulletin No. 75-05

Dear Mr. Keppler:

NRC.Dkt Nos. 50-10, 50-237, 50-249, 50-254, 50-265, 50-295, and 50~304 The following the "Action to be Taken information is provided in response to by Licensees" in th'e*-..... subject bulletin.

Action.l.a This response will be provided by June 20,

 • 1975.

Action l.b This response will be provided by *June 20, 1975.

Action l.c Most hydraulic suppressors used at Dresden, Quad-Cities, and Zion Stations are manufactured by Bergen-Patterson Pipesupport Corpora-tioh and ITT Grinnell Corpoiation.

In addition, Quad-Cities also has some Parker-Hannafin suppressors.

SURVEILLANCE REQUIREMENTS.

Bergen-Patterson The present surveillance program consists of a visual inspection.

The inspection criteria includes oil reservoir level, piston rod seal or 0-ring leakage, fastener defects and high i1D3//IJ s-~_S-p "v 1 9 1975.

 • I pres~ure piping and control valve integrity.

Piston rod extension measurements are taken from those shock absorbers which are ac-cessible.

The measurements made. compare piston rod extension with accumulator plunger position.

A determination of snubber opera-bili~y is made based on acceptable piston rod travel.

Grinnel and Parker Hannafin Grinnell snubbers also are visually inspected for oil reservoir level, fastener integrity and excessive piston rod or valve seal leakage.

SURVEILLANCE SCHEDULE Dresden Units 2 and 3, Quad-Cities Units 1 and 2 - Surveillance is performed on accessible snubber:..; every 30 days.

Snubbers which are inaccessible for inspection during reactor operation are in-spected whenever the reactor has been shutdown for 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
or longer and the snubbers* have not been inspected for 30 days.

The maximum interval between inspections is not to exceed 120 days.

Dresden Unit 1 - Grinnell snubbers are used exclusively for Dresden Unit 1.

There exists no regular schedule for snubber inspections.

The snubbers are inspected whenever the core spray line is dis-connected from the vessel head.

Zion Uni ts 1 and 2 *- Surveillance on the Bergen-Patterson snubbers is done once within every 120 days, when the unit is in the hot or cold shutdown mode.

The snubbers are accessible only during such periods*.

The Grinnell snubbers used on the main steam and feed-water systems are inspected every four months.

In February 1974, a one time test was performed on a single Bergen-Patterson snubber.

Displacement rate at design load for compression*and extension were measured.

The results were satisfactory.
