EQUIPf'lEiVT MALFUNCTION RESULTING IN AN OUTAGE OF GREATER THAN TWO D

On October 18, 1980, whi Le operating at fuLL power, a reactor trip occurred.

The trip was due to a unit differentiaL trip from a fault indication from the neutraL ground transformer.

Investigations by the Licensee confirmed that the actuaL source of this signaL was a short circuit in one of the main phase windings of the main generator.

PreLiminary. visuaL inspection of the main generator reveals

a. burned spot on one of the stator bars on the exciter end of the generator.

The Licensee estimates that it wiLL require a minimum of one month for repairs.

The unit is in the co Ld shutdown mode.

All systems functioned as required in response to the trip.

There were no radio-Logical releases.

The State of Nichigan wiLL be notified.

The Licensee plans to issue a press release.

This PN is issued for information only.

This on October 20, 1980.
