Subject:
SALEM UNIT 2 REACTOR CRITICAL Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable The Salem Unit 2 reactor went critical at 1:14 pm, August 17. NRC inspectors, on-shift at the time, observed the approach to criticality.
Backshift inspection coverage is in progress to monitor reactor startup and the power ascension program.
Prior to taking the reactor critical, the licensee resolved disagreement problems between the group rod position indication (GRPI) and the individual rod position indication (IRPI) for various control rods. These problems had been the primary source of the delay in achieving criticality.
Once the IRPis for all rods were recalibrated, the approach to criticality was resumed.
The States of New Jersey and Delaware have been notified.
The facts of this PN were confirmed by a representative from PSE and G Nuclear Licensing.
